   3.1 - The Sanjiyan Unkara

     Sanjiyan Unkara, $B;0B~4cR_2`Me(B

Members of a powerful and ancient race, the Sanjiyan are beautiful and
extremely long-lived creatures. They are very human-like in appearance
except for a third eye on the forehead. Because of this third eye,
they are called Sanjiyan (three-eyes, triclops) and sometimes are
denominated three-eyed monsters, remarkably in late legends.

In more recent times the Sanjiyan are almost dead as a species, very
few of them are still alive. In the original story, up to volume 6 only
one Sanjiyan was still around on earth (Pai) and the other one was
trapped in the Holy Land (Kaiyanwang / Shiva). Later, someone says
there are more Sanjiyan alive hiding on Earth and near dimensions, but
they are NOT willing to be found and want to be left alone.

The Sanjiyan lived in a huge fortress in the Holy Land which could only
be reached through Konron ($BVBVF(B, the K'unlun mountains), the
range of mountains in northern Tibet, now the supposed location of
their Holy Land. Quoting the M&NG: "In Chinese myth, K'un-lun is a
sort of paradise ruled by Hsi Wang Mu (same as Seioubou, in Japanese).
It later became known as the place where the dead might achieve
     Buddhist Nirvana."

The Sanjiyan Holy Land is not on earth but in an alternate plane of
existence and travel between it and earth is only possible using
special magical gates, the Konron. The location of the Holy Land was a
well protected secret, and the truth about the Konron cannot be found
even in the most obscure legends.

About 300 years ago (which is around Pai's age in the manga), a war
between a mad and violent Sanjiyan (Shiva), his VERY powerful Wu
(Benares) and the rest of the Sanjiyan almost resulted in the species'
extinction. After a bloody war, all the surviving Sanjiyan lost their
lives to banish Shiva forever to the holy land and seal him there. Pai
was the only known survivor. Alone on the holy ground, she decided to
end her species and become human. She tried hard to forget all the pain
and sorrow in her past, and moved to the Tibetan mountains. There she
waited, until she was found by Yakumo's father.

Before being banished, Shiva had taken for himself the title of
Kaiyanwang (Demon-eyes king), and that is how he is called by Benares
     and his other servants now.

Even at that time, when there were thousands of Sanjiyan alive in the
Holy Land (ten thousands perhaps, but no more than that: the manga
suggests that the Sanjiyan Unkara were never a numerous race), they
were already in very serious trouble.

Quoting the M&NG (sic): "Apparently, the Sanjiyan are a degenerate
race; the older ones have become decadent and callous, while the
younger, more emotional ones will develop split personalities (e.g.
the dual nature of Pai/Parvati). Some Sanjiyan believed that this
mental death will be their ultimate end, and volunteered themselves to
     be turned into human beings."

This dual personality was not their only problem. Although they were
very powerful magic-wise (it would be advisable for GMs to spend a few
_hours_ digesting the idea of a race were ALL people have Magery +3 in
a "high mana" area and the implications of that before sending the
players through a Konron during a time the Sanjiyan were still alive),
they were as physically fragile as any human.

Worse, the Sanjiyan have a dangerous limitation regarding spell
casting. They can access some of the most powerful spells ever cast on
earth, but they need to rest immediately after casting such spells.

For dual-personality Sanjiyan, in most cases the "human" personality
will be able to take over quickly, less than a minute after the more
wise and powerful "Sanjiyan" personality passed out from exhaustion.
This can be easily noticed due to the closing of the third eye, which
is under exclusive control of the "Sanjiyan" personality.

One should note that a closed third eye is not easy to detect; the
forehead will appear to be human, the eye closing perfectly with no
     eyelashes.

During sleep a Sanjiyan is very vulnerable to attacks. They need a
guardian to protect them, a very strong one if it would need to face
     other Sanjiyan or powerful demons.

Once during his life, the Sanjiyan will absorb and merge the soul of a
chosen one with his own (A human soul looks like a light gelatinous
~10cm radius ball in both the manga and Anime). With his soul trapped
and merged with the Sanjiyan's, this person will become immortal, and
will have the duty to protect his Sanjiyan's life above everything
     else.

The Sanjiyan are very picky about whom they will turn into a Wu, and
there is *NO* chance something they consider to be scum (low-life
forms, all the low level demons, and even some high level ones are
included here) will be chosen to be a Wu. Even among high level demons
and humans, only those who could be a good guardian due to their
physical and magical power will be chosen.

In the manga, Parvati only turned Yakumo (a normal and quite power-
less human from a Sanjiyan's point of view) into a Wu to save his life
at Pai's request, because she thought she was the last Sanjiyan alive
and therefore she was on the safe side. The fact that Yakumo was the
only one who could help her become human at that given time added a
     _lot_ to the decision.

   Game mechanics:

The power level of a Sanjiyan resides in their extra magic fatigue,
which allows casting of very powerful spells without the need of other
mana sources or group rituals. Sanjiyan are quite intimate to magic
and some of their spells (especially the most powerful ones) are simply
not accessible to other races, except some VERY high-classed demons and
Wu; other creatures cannot understand magic enough to cast those
spells. The GM is free to rule which spells are Sanjiyan-only. A Wu may
try learning some of those spells due to their link with the Sanjiyan
but this is never as effective and those spells will not be available
above skill level 15 and will always be treated as very hard spells.

The Sanjiyan's extra fatigue will recover at normal rate (1 point every
10 minutes of rest, during which no spells may be cast) whenever the
three-eyed personality is not controlling the body, or sleeping. This
rate of increase is independent from normal fatigue (which is body
related), as long as the Sanjiyan is not extremely tired, with less
then 5 points of fatigue remaining, or under extreme body stress (e.g.:
badly wounded). The Recover Strength spell can, and should, be used for
faster recovery. It will always operate first on the normal fatigue
before helping the recovery of magic only fatigue; See p. M49 or p.
     B162 for details.

The third eye must close if the Sanjiyan exceeds (empties) his extra
fatigue, but this closing can be delayed by succeeding a Will roll at
-4 every 5 minutes. With the third eye closed, the powerful personality
will sleep to recover the magic fatigue. It may awaken before full
rest, but the Will roll will be at -4 if the magic fatigue is at less
than 25% or -2 if it is at less than 50%.

Due to their dual personality nature, Sanjiyan characters are played
with two character sheets, one with the 'human' personality and the
other with the three-eyed personality. As per the Split Personality
disadvantage (p. B37), each sheet should be bought separately with
their point total being _on average_ the desired character point level
     (i.e.: a 300 Points Sanjiyan could be a 450+150 point character).

Personality change may happen anytime and requires a Will roll by the
personality who wants to take control. If the other personality wants
to resist, a Quick Contest of Will should be made. The degree of
awareness one personality has of the other should be defined by the GM
and player during character creation, but the three-eyed personality
_must_ know about the other one. Unpredictable changes may also happen
at the GM's will. See p. B37 for more details.

Some degree of memory leakage between them is also advised and one
personality *can* talk to the other, as long as both of them know about
each other. The talking may be done by thought or voice. Also, both
personalities *can* be awake at the same time. During this, the normal
eyes are under the control of the human personality and the third eye
is under the control of the triclops personality. This is NOT common,
     though.

The dual nature of a Sanjiyan should be kept in mind when the two
personalities are built. Almost always, the human one should be calm
and good-natured, while the three-eyed one should at least get some
attitude. It's not impossible to build a good natured three-eyed
personality; Pai's mother (Parvati III) was very nice even with her
third eye open, unlike almost all other Sanjiyan in their city. Of
course that should reflect on the human personality, who should either
be a completely docile person, with the strong degree of the Pacifism
disadvantage like Pai's mother, or an impossible-to-stand-for-more-
     than-3-minutes arrogant and short-tempered person.

The Sanjiyan can cast some spells and communicate with his Wu without
the usual penalties due to distance, as long as both are still on the
same plane. This happens because the Wu's soul is merged with the
Sanjiyan's one. It is common for a Sanjiyan to cast a telepathy spell
when calling for the Wu's help, since there are no range limitations or
     penalties.

Usually both personalities know how to use the telepathic spells, but
they won't work well if the Sanjiyan is in a weakened state. More than
once Pai found herself unable to call Yakumo due to a strong cold, or
     serious physical wounds.

The Sanjiyan Unkara physiology is NOT human. Their organs are nearly
human when it comes to function and position inside the body, but they
are different from us at the cellular level; also, the third eye will
probably be noticed by any TL6+ doctor during a checkup, even if it is
kept closed. X-Ray, CAT scans, and other more advanced diagnostics will
certainly detect the anomalies. Brain scans will clearly show a
non-human brain (but it looks almost human and it should foil untrained
individuals). At TL7 or higher, a Sanjiyan would be considered an alien
life form, very close to being human but still alien nonetheless.

       Three-eyed personality package: (90 points)

known by: some occultists, almost all demons

         Racial personality traits
Cannot understand, or do, self-sacrifice, even to save a
loved one. The human personality is the only possible
exception (-2 reaction from anyone but most demons).
Known by: anyone who have had enough contact with the
Sanjiyan Unkara during dangerous situations. [-5]

       Human personality package: (80 points)
         Split Personality (imperfect) [-10]
         Appearance: Attractive (+1/+1) [5]
         Magic Aptitude (Magery) +3 [35]
         Mage Sense (Sanjiyan) [15]
         Unaging [15]
         Extra magic-only fatigue +10 [20]
(MUST BE half the other personality's)

The Sanjiyan must also usually buy his Wu (if any) as an Ally. Note
that this will often be a one-way relationship, and the Sanjiyan will
not care too much about his Wu's problems unless they interfere with
     his role as a bodyguard.

     The Sanjiyan Unkara are more sensitive to magic than most other mages;
they have the intrinsic ability to sense the proximity of any magical
object, even if the object is not in their field of view (this is an
enhanced version of the usual Magery rolls, refer to p. B21). They can
also identify a creature in their field of view as a magical being on a
successful IQ roll. This ability cannot uncover anything about the
being itself, it will only flag something as a magical creature or
mage. It *will* detect invisible magic creatures.

In most settings, a "magic creature" is a being who needs magic energy
to survive, or has Magery levels and/or any intrinsic magic abilities.
Cursed beings may or may not be detected as magical beings at the GM's
     discretion.

A typical adult Sanjiyan would be a 300 to 500 point character (with
the points split unevenly between the two personalities), and will have
at least 200 points in spells, including some for the human personality
(especially telepathy and protection ones). More extra fatigue can be
bought, but it should require an Unusual Background and, of course, the
     GM's permission.

The actual "Wu" character is variously said to represent:
"A multitude of men, acting upon a forest, felling the trees, clearing
a tract of land. ... Hence ... the general abstract notions of
      vanishing, defect, want, negation."
"A person kneeling at a table, head turned, indicating that they
are unable to eat any more."
-- Excerpt from the 3x3 Eyes Magic and Names Guide

The Wu are the guardian of Sanjiyan. The name "Wu" comes from the Wu
mark which appears on the chosen one's forehead when the Sanjiyan
merges his soul with the Wu's. This Wu mark cannot be removed by ANY
MEANS, not even magic, and will only disappear if the Wu dies or is
turned back into a normal being. It can be disguised, though: just
cover it with some clothing, artificial skin or an illusion spell.

Since a Wu's soul is not in his body anymore, he becomes immortal in
the VERY sense of the word and cannot be killed even if his body is
turned into ashes. In game terms, a Wu will receive damage as any
ordinary character, but he will not die regardless of the type and
amount of damage taken and/or accumulated, even if this damage goes
     past -10xHT.

This immortality is not magic or mana dependent. It's a direct effect
of one's soul not being free and inside his body anymore. A Wu is
immortal even inside a zero mana area, and it does not matter how far
from his Sanjiyan the Wu is. Exiling a Wu (or his Sanjiyan) to another
plane, reality or universe will have NO effect on the Wu's immortality.

There are drawbacks on this immortality, however. Anyone who can read
auras will know a Wu is not a normal being, although it would be
difficult to actually identify him as a Wu with only an aura reading
and no other background knowledge. The Wu's aura is not the same as
the regular undead one and Wu will _not_ be easily mistaken with
ordinary zombies for their life shade is far stronger than that of the
regular undead. They will not appear to be human, though.

Also, a Wu will _die_ if his Sanjiyan dies, his soul being freed and
going to final rest along with the Sanjiyan's. This alone is enough
reason for a Wu to fulfill his duties as the Sanjiyan's body-guard, but
a Sanjiyan will not usually choose to be his Wu someone who would
protect him just to avoid death.

The Wu has a VERY POWERFUL and VERY FAST regeneration. He will recover
1 HT per second of ANY kind of damage and neutralize 50 rads per hour
of absorbed radiation damage. Any smashed, bruised and even clipped
(but not _lost_) parts of the body will regenerate as the Wu's HT
     increases.

Lost limbs will slow down the healing a lot, since it takes some time
to regrow the flesh instead of only "flowing" it back into place.
Regrowth will be needed instead of the regeneration if the body is
burned to ashes, disintegrated or if it takes any other damage which
leaves nothing to be regenerated. The regrowth will also be needed if
for any reason a lost limb cannot be recovered to be "glued" to the
proper location. In the manga, Yakumo glued his head back into place by
holding it still, but needed to regrow an arm that got smashed under a
     fallen bridge.

Unfortunately the regrowth can't be triggered during combat, as it
requires the stress level of the organism to drop a little. Note that
taking a break during combat (wait maneuver) for more than 5 seconds is
enough to trigger the regrowth, unless the character can avoid the fall
of the adrenaline levels. Once started, it won't stop until the limb is
fully recovered. It would be wise to remember that fatigue from the
combat will probably choose this rest moment to make itself known by
     the body...

The regrowth is extremely painful and usage of that limb will impose a
penalty of [remaining HT to be recovered] to DX/skill rolls, even with
the High Pain Threshold advantage (if the Wu lost this advantage for
some reason, he will need to roll against his Will-[remaining HT to be
recovered] to avoid passing out from pain). Some penalty to all the
other skill rolls should be set by the GM until the limb is recovered.

Regrowing flesh takes twice as much time as a regeneration would take
and it WILL spend fatigue, at a ratio of 1 fatigue point each 5 hit
points. It's up to the GM to rule when a limb cannot be regenerated and
     will require regrowth instead.

If the regrowth process is stopped due to exhaustion, it will either
keep the Wu asleep until full regrowth or stop draining fatigue and
switch to 'normal' recovery instead. The latter can only happen if more
than 3/4 of the hit points were already regrown AND there is flesh to
"flow" back into place. Obviously if a Wu is disintegrated or reduced
to ashes, he will have to regrow every hit point.

I do recommend watching the Anime to get the full idea on how
spectacular the regeneration is: the lost body pieces and fluids
(including all non-coagulated blood) will turn into a very fast
flowing, almost black reddish smoke and flow back to its original
     place, reverting to flesh again.

Anyone watching this for the first time (and not used to this kind of
experience) should do a fright check. Passing out, freezing or running
away in absolute fear are quite common reactions. Even demons and other
magical creatures should make a Will roll not to be stunned by surprise
if they are not used to have Wu around.

A clipped limb may be kept from flowing back with magic: locking it
into a flask sealed with special magic charms (with the Pentagram
spell) is a way to accomplish this, and Yakumo was threatened to have
this done to him more than once in the manga.

The head should also receive some special attention. If the head (the
main brain housing, for non-human Wu) is split from the body, none of
the two will disappear and flow back. The Wu will need to join his
halves the hard way for enough time to let its "neck" regenerate. A
_badly_ damaged head WILL flow back to its body, though. Of course if
the head is so damaged as to trigger the regrowth, the Wu will be
unconscious. Note that the head stills control the body, even after
being severed, with no penalties other than those due to the eyesight
position shift, loss of the sense of balance (for humans) and so on.

Obviously, such a high rate of regeneration also grants a Wu almost
full immunity to diseases, and a VERY strong immunity to poison.
Alcohol (or other Central Nervous System depressors) and some types of
toxic gas might work, but the effects are likely to be _much_ weaker
than in normal beings: the Wu's resistance will attack the pathologic
agent the very same moment it tries to do something harmful and will
only stop when it is completely dissipated and all the damage repaired.

Normal poison will only have bad effects on a critical failure (and the
resulting damage will be WEAK, no matter how much poison the Wu got
into his blood). Toxic gas effects can only last while the Wu is
breathing it, and should be weaker than expected on normal beings. A Wu
has an extra +8 bonus to resistance rolls against any other threat to
his metabolism (even most magical ones!).

There is only one exception to the immunity to diseases, which is a
special magical 'virus' capable of disrupting the Wu's capacity to
control magical powers (causing backlashes). This virus only appeared
very late on the manga, and the demons needed to make Yakumo eat it by
treachery to contaminate him who in turn contaminated Parvati due to
her own fault, but with weaker effects. It spreads through body
     fluids.

Taking deadly damage and then regenerating it repeated times is bound
to grant a Wu with a much stronger resistance against pain, since an
experienced Wu KNOWS nothing can kill him, and his body will end up
knowing it too. The long term exposure to this also gives the Wu an
exceptionally high resistance against passing out from intense pain,
which in GURPS terms means a bonus to the related Will rolls.

Also, a Wu will only suffer _some_ of the debilitating effects of
injury when his HP (hit points) reaches below zero. He will be at half
Move then, and will suffer normally from crippling injuries. If HP
reaches below -HT, a Wu will suffer the normal injury effects.

Another interesting aspect of the Wu is that a severed body part is
still under its mind control, just as if it was still attached to the
body and will act accordingly. There should be some penalty to DX based
rolls in this case (-4 will do just fine), including any DX based
skills. Nobody is used to have his center of gravity and viewfield
changed that much unless he is a shapeshifter!

The remote control of lost body limbs is quite tiring and will spend 1
fatigue point every 2 seconds of control per limb. In the Manga, Yakumo
learnt this lesson well and defeated a number of enemies (including
Benares) using clipped limbs to his advantage. The only exception is a
severed head, which will spend NO fatigue to control the body.

Although it is VERY difficult to do, the status of Wu can be revoked or
changed via _extremely_ powerful magic, like the humanification
process. One would have to devise a way to take the Wu's soul from the
Sanjiyan, who cannot release the soul by his own will, and either
destroy the soul, or its binding to the Sanjiyan's. There are some very
powerful creatures who could do this, some of them appearing in the
manga, but as a rule of thumb, no Sanjiyan (or Wu for that matter)
would allow such a dangerous monster to approach them, unless something
     really weird is happening.

It's unclear how much of the Wu's power would remain after his soul is
freed, especially if he is a beast magician. The manga suggests that
normal humans would lose all the power, but it might be possible to
reacquire such powers if the ex-Wu could devise a way to retain or
redevelop his Magery levels. That would normally be impossible by GURPS
rules, but NOT in the 3x3 Eyes universe.

        Magic Aptitude +1 (Wu) [15]
        Mage Sense (Wu) [05]

        Wu Reputations (-3 reaction) [-5]
           Extremely dangerous being
             known by: most demons

The Wu Resilience advantage reflects the expanded capacity of a Wu's
body to tolerate extremely abusive damage. A Wu will only lose
consciousness automatically on -5xHT (the usual death limit), and the
following modifiers should be applied to the Will Roll to avoid
consciousness loss (HP means hit points, that is _current_ HT):

       HP : -5xHT -4xHT -3xHT -2xHT -HT
       Bonus:   |--- -4 ---|--- -2 ---|--- 0 ---|--- +2 ---|--- +4 -->

The effort to keep oneself awake with so much damage will double the
fatigue cost of the fight if HP < -3xHT, and quadruple it if HP <
-4xHT. This usually means the Wu will need sweet dreams while his body
recovers the damage after a mean fight. Wake-up rolls may be attempted
any time after HP increases above -2xHT (-2 penalty) or -HT (no
penalty). The usual rules (see p. B129) for awakening from
unconsciousness due to injuries also apply. Severe damage to the
brains will render a Wu unconscious no matter what.

This advantage must be fine-tuned by the GM for non-human Wu who
already have some kind of increased tolerance to avoid the loss of
     consciousness.

The Magery level (or upgrades, if the character already had any
previous levels) will become active when the "Wu" mark appears on the
newborn Wu's forehead. This Magic Aptitude is related to the link
between the Wu and the Sanjiyan, and also gives the Wu the ability to
sense whether a creature or person in his field of view (and nearby) is
a magical being or not on a successful IQ roll. The GM is free to rule
whether regular mages would be sensed by the Wu's Mage Sense or not; it
is weaker than the Sanjiyan's counterpart.

A Wu _must_ also have either one of:
Duty (Protect and serve his Sanjiyan, at expense of own life) [varies]
Sense of Duty (to his Sanjiyan) [-5]

The above will be applied to the character as soon as it discovers what
it means to be a Wu. The exact wording of the duty should be based on
roleplaying, and set by the GM, NOT the player.

A Wu might take the Extremely Hazardous Duty [-20] disadvantage instead
of the normal Duty disadvantage in some unusual campaigns, at the GM's
discretion. While a Wu usually cannot be "permanently damaged" by his
bodyguard duties, failure to perform said duties might lead to his
Sanjiyan's death, and these duties are certain to screw up whatever
normal life he had before and endanger any friends he keeps too close
to, if he was a human before.

The Wu might also need to buy his Sanjiyan as an Ally or Patron, If the
Sanjiyan is a PC, this is worth 0 points and should only be done if the
Sanjiyan PC also took the Ally (Wu) advantage.

A character will always have a Sense of Duty towards an ally, and the
[-5] points are already implied in the ally cost if you used the
standard rules in the Basic Set. A character shouldn't have any duties
towards an ally as those were already covered by the implied Sense of
     Duty disadvantage.

Most Wu are medium to high level characters, ranging from 150 to 300
points, with the extra 500-points package added later. GMs should be
careful with this, as it will easy unbalance the game. In a 500 point
game a Wu would be a VERY weak character, while most other common
characters (including the Sanjiyan Unkara) would work correctly. More
ideas on how to deal with this can be found in the campaign chapter.

   3.3 - Demons

Demons are quite common creatures in the 3x3 Eyes universe, but they do
not follow the stereotype of evil creatures. Almost any magical
creature (including Sanjiyan and Wu) is either called "demon" or
"monster", the difference being quite subtle.

Demons make interesting characters, be they PCs or NPCs. They are also
the most troublesome foes of 3x3 Eyes. The average "Gesu" (low life,
weak demon, cannon fodder) could be a very deadly foe for a human
party, and a troublesome annoyance to a Sanjiyan or Wu, and the plans
of a single high level demon could be the base of a campaign's plot.

Every 3x3 Eyes demon is capable of some spell casting. Some have
intrinsic spells, others have standard magical abilities, ranging from
almost harmless to very powerful deadly mages. Beast magic is also
common among demons, but it is extremely rare to find a demon using
more than one type of magic.

While low class (weak or stupid) demons are usually treated by
everybody else as nothing but cannon fodder or tools, and difficult to
find wandering around unless they're under orders of some other demon,
high class demons can be found in the most interesting places,
     including among humans.

Most high classed demons either are humanoid or disguise themselves to
look like humans, and quite a few of them try to live their lives in a
comfortable way among us. Of course if some magic knowledge and
spellcasting abilities can help them accomplish their goals, so much
the better. Most demons won't consider sacrificing human lives as an
obstacle at all, quite the same way most of them will not show much
loyalty to their minors. There are those who think otherwise, and are
pretty decent people. Unfortunately, the "good demons" are usually too
busy minding their own business and taking care of their own lives.
Encounters with their evil colleagues are therefore much easier to
     notice.

The demonic society is almost completely based on power. The more
powerful, the more respect a demon gets. Due to that characteristic, it
is common for a high classed demon to have a number of minors, either
monsters, lower demons or even humans. Minors have variable degrees of
loyalty, and their masters often show little respect for them. Not all
demons are ruthless with their minors (e.g.: Shunkai treat hers quite
well) and those can expect more loyalty.

It is not uncommon for Sanjiyan and Wu to have some high level demons
under their command, since they are very high in the power pyramid.
Actually, being turned into Wu is something most demons would move
mountains to accomplish, since very few of them are immortal. In the
3x3 Eyes manga story line, almost every existent demon is under direct
or indirect command of Benares. Some obey him because they are afraid
of Benares' and Kaiyanwang's powers, others because they believe
Kaiyanwang will grant them immortality if they aid Benares in his
mission to awaken once again the Demon-eyes king.

Loyalty is always an issue when dealing with demons. The weaker the
demon, the more loyal it will be to its master, be it a demon, mage,
Sanjiyan or Wu. High-class demons have plans and objectives of their
own, and may betray their masters if it would help them accomplish
their goals. But betrayal is not always the rule, and demons can be
good allies... it is just very difficult to be sure whether one
particular demon should be trusted or not, and for how long.

Players and GMs should also keep in mind that most demons consider
humans to be lower life forms, except for those very few who have
proven themselves to be worth the respect. This is very much akin to
the way most Sanjiyan thinks, too. This behavior also applies to the
weaker demons, and the degree of ruthlessness high classed demons often
show towards their minors comes from this attitude.

   Demon characters:

Most demons in 3x3 Eyes are able to speak, or at the very least
understand, Sanskrit. All high level demons and most low level ones
can speak or understand the local language, too. Literacy is the rule
for high level demons, both Devanagari (for Sanskrit) and the local
script, but the low level ones might dismiss such knowledge as useless
and go for raw power or combat skills instead.

Some advantages and skills, such as Magery 2 or higher, Secret,
Savoir-Faire (both demonic and local), either some kind of intrinsic
power or a number of powerful spells, Bloodlust and/or Overconfidence,
and sometimes Sadism are highly advised for 'evil' high level demon
characters. A high level demon will not try to overcome every foe it
comes across by sheer power. They will think it out, ally with other
beings, plot and betray. Many of the high level demons would be
personifications of the 'perfect' CEO, merciless and cold.

They are used to being the puppet masters, and that usually is their
biggest weakness. High level demons are prone to react poorly to being
ordered around by anyone, and most of them will underestimate some
non-obviously gifted foe every so often. While almost every high level
demon would not repeat such a mistake, one opportunity is all one needs
to neutralize a demon, as long as it is very thoroughly planned.

High level demons usually have some status and wealth, as most of them
are quite fond of that kind of power, especially the ones who deal with
humans or live among us. All high level demons must take the Status
(demonic) advantage, at level 2 or higher.

"Evil" low level demons are quite worse, from a human point of view.
They could care less for who and how many they kill. Overconfidence,
Bloodlust, Sadism and Primitivism are common disadvantages, and usually
are all present at once. In 3x3 Eyes, low level demons also have at
least one intrinsic power, and are in fact very powerful beings. The
real reason they are treated as cannon fodder is that they simply do
not have enough tact nor patience to overcome neither intelligent foes
nor difficult problems. Low level demons are not suitable to be played
as PCs by anybody but the most deranged players.

The 'good' demons may fit anywhere between the two categories above.
With the exception of whatever magical abilities, powers or body
features which make them non-human, they are common characters without
especially recommended advantages or disadvantages. High level demons
of the more altruistic sort are rare, but they do exist. Low level
demons of the 'good' or neutral sort are usually classified as
monsters, or 'magic creatures' by the Western, and want little more
other than to be left alone living their own lives.

   3.4 - Other magical creatures

Here should be included information about the weird Holy Land fauna,
hybrid animals and other strange life forms. This section will not
be written until I manage to read the later volumes of 3x3 Eyes.

3.5 - Skills, advantages and disadvantages

     3.5.1 - Languages

Note on languages and literacy: Your mother (primary) language and
literacy costs 0 points at TL5 or above. Literacy on Secondary
languages are also free at TL5 and above. This is NOT valid for
Celestial Calligraphy. At TL4 and below, literacy in one script is an
advantage worth 10 points, and additional scripts might require an
unusual background at the GM's will.

     Sanskrit Mental/Average
     Devanagari Literacy

The Sanskrit skill relates to the capacity to both understand and
speak Sanskrit, while literacy in the Devanagari script gives the
character the ability to read and write texts in Sanskrit.
Devanagari is also used for the Hindi language.

Some of the more powerful spells of the 3x3 Eyes setting are in
Sanskrit, as are most interesting legends about the Sanjiyan
Unkara. Those might be rather difficult to understand and might
require an actual language skill roll at some penalty.

     Chinese (dialect), Japanese Mental/Average
     Chinese Literacy and Japanese Literacy

Japanese and Chinese literacy is the ability to read and write
the Chinese (Hanzi) / Japanese (Kanji) ideographs and Japanese
Kana. Chinese does not include Kana, but does include a lot more
ideograms, and refers to the general use script form of that
       language.

The similarities between the Chinese and Japanese ideograms do
allow a person to sometimes grasp the basic meaning of an unknown
       _written_ word in either language.

There are a huge number of Chinese dialects. They default to each
other at -2 (simplification for game purposes).

     Roman Alphabet Literacy

This is the ability to read and write the western Roman
       alphabet and slight variations.

     3.5.2 - Advantages and Disadvantages

     Celestial Calligraphy 10 points

This is an Unusual Background advantage. Characters who will be
using Chinese paper charms magic are required to have it.

The Celestial Calligraphy (also called Thunder Writing) is a
variation of the Chinese script. It is used by paper charm
magicians to draw the charm itself, and it is not meant be used
       in normal writing.

Illiterate on the Local Script -5 points

You are illiterate on the local script. You know the local
language, and you are literate on _another_ language, which uses
_another_ script, but for some reason you never took the time to
learn the local script. This disadvantage must be taken only once
(no matter how many scripts you do not know), and at the GMs
discretion. Obviously there is no point in taking this
disadvantage unless your partial illiteracy will effectively
       cripple your day-to-day activities.

This disadvantage is non-existent at TL4 or below (or in any
other time frame where illiteracy is not a disadvantage). See
Illiteracy at p. B17, side bar.

Status (Sanjiyan Unkara) 5 points per level

See pp. B18 and B191. Here is a sample status table for the Holy
Land (obviously in a Sanjiyan Unkara point of view):

        5: Kaiyanwang
4: Personal circle of Kaiyanwang, Kaiyanwang's Wu
        3: Internal circle of Kaiyanwang
        2: Very important Sanjiyan
        1: Important Sanjiyan or Wu,
           Powerful or important high-level demon
0: Average Sanjiyan or Wu, High-level demon, human/elven heroes
       -1: Important non-demon and non-Sanjiyan/Wu character
           (human/elves) most humanified Sanjiyan
-2: Regular humans or any other non-magical race,
           low level demons
-3: Slave, any race. Weak low level demons

Usually a Wu must be at least one status rank lower than his
Sanjiyan, and this status cannot be more than 3 ranks lower.

Status (Demonic) 5 points per level

See pp. B18 and B191. Here is a sample status table for the
demons. Benares has got status 4 according to this table, and a
fully recovered Shiva (Kaiyanwang) would have status 5.

7 to 5: (You don't want to know about it nor meet it)
             4: Extremely powerful being
             3: Powerful high level demon
or some other very powerful being
             2: Average high level demon
                or some other powerful being
             1: Powerful low level demon
             0: Average low level demon
-1: Extremely dangerous humans, elves or
                any other non-magic-user beings
-2: Slaves, Normal humans, elves and other beings

     3.5.3 - Skills

     Area Knowledge Mental/Easy
Defaults to IQ-4 for areas where you _lived_ at

See p. B62. Some characters might have Area Knowledge about the
Holy Land, or the Sanjiyan Unkara fortress. Also, Sanjiyan Unkara
and Wu might know the location of some of the gates (Konron), but
this _is_ subject to the GM's will. Sanjiyan and Wu living in
the Holy Land should know about at least one gate, even without
       taking this skill.

     Occultism (Sanjiyan Unkara) Mental/Average
Defaults to Occultism (Demonology) -3 or Occultism -5

This skill is a required specialization of the Occultism skill
       (p. B61), due to the obscurity of the Sanjiyan Unkara legends,
and refers to knowledge on Sanjiyan Unkara legends and related
magical artifacts. This skill is not related to factual or real
knowledge on the Sanjiyan culture, it only reflects knowledge of
the legends carried on by earth civilizations that dealt with the
Sanjiyan Unkara, often exaggerated or completely untrue. Some of
the legends are very near the truth, however, especially those
       that deal with magic items.

This skill should not be available above level 12 unless the
character also knows how to read in Sanskrit or has got a
suitable Unusual Background, as most of the interesting legends
about the Sanjiyan are only found in that language.

     Riding (Shou-Lin) Physical/Average
Defaults to DX-5, Skate Boarding -2, Surfing -2

This skill is used to ride the Shou-Lin beast. It cannot be
defaulted to any other (common) riding skill.

     Savoir-Faire (Sanjiyan Unkara) Mental/Easy
Defaults to IQ-4 or Occultism (Sanjiyan Unkara)-3

Refer to p. B64. Failure to perform according to the correct
Savoir-Faire rules might be very dangerous for a character if he
(or she) is talking to or if it happens before a very important
Sanjiyan Unkara or Wu. A Savoir-Faire failure before Kaiyanwang
is guaranteed to be very hazardous to one's health.

     Savoir-Faire (Demonic) Mental/Easy
Defaults to IQ-4 or Occultism-3 or Occultism (Demonology)

Refer to p. B64. This skill may prove to be very handy when
dealing with demons, especially high-level ones which would
probably look down on whomever failed to perform according to
their social rules. Critical failures in demonic savoir-faire
almost always lead to disaster, and death.
